The Art of Living a More Simplistic Life 1

It’s so easy in this complicated world to get all wrapped up in the expectations of society.  Our cultural presumptions of what we should do and where we should be in life confine each and every one of us. “Don’t do this”, “you should have done that”, “this is your next step” are frequent thoughts that swirl around in our heads.  Whether these thoughts are put there by others or by your own over-active brain is irrelevant: they are still present.  Believe it or not, there is an Art of Living a More Simplistic Life. Let’s all just take a moment, breathe, level down from the clouds and think more simplistically.  To summarize, I can’t get any more simplistic than a valuable lesson from a children’s book.

The Mission: To practice The Art of Living a More Simplistic Life.

We’ve all read the book – that little, spoiled, blonde haired girl that broke into someone’s loving home.  Goldilocks wreaked havoc in the Bear’s house: breaking chairs, eating their food and causing the family stress by an intruder.  Sure, from the Bear’s perspective this was an unjust nuisance.  However, just for the sake of being a devil’s advocate, let’s change our perception.

Goldilocks, a curious little girl, wandering through the woods came across a cozy cottage that piqued her interest.  Conversely, you have to give her credit, though, she did at least knock first.  Upon entering, she discovered a world that could have been new to her.  Maybe she never experienced porridge at a family dinner table (or in this instance, breakfast table).  We just can’t assume that Goldilocks had a family life like the Three Bears.  Perhaps Goldilocks slept in a dirty cot in an attic, scrambled for food or had no family structure.  Regardless of her own life experiences, there was no doubt that she was intrigued.

How does this all tie into The Art of Living a More Simplistic Life?

What life lessons could we possibly learn from a little, breaking-and-entering thief?  Despite Goldilocks’ past experiences and societal notions of right and wrong, Goldilocks knew what she wanted.  She tried all the chairs, all the porridge bowls and each bed.  Papa Bear’s world was too much for her. Mama Bear was not satisfying enough. Whereas Baby Bear’s possessions and preferences were “just right”.  In Goldilocks’ world, it was a perfect balance.  She had the courage to not only try new things, but had no reservations on selecting the things that gave her balance and peace.

I’m not saying to go out and find your balance and peace through any criminal means necessary.  Nevertheless, what I am saying is we need to stand back and discover what it is in this life that brings us peace, joy and harmony.  Situations and experiences CAN be too much for us to handle.  People and relationships CAN be under-stimulating for our liking.  It’s OK to recognize that in yourself and strive for more, better, and in some cases, less.  It’s OK to not follow the “next steps” in life.  We are put in this restricted box of how things should be for the collective.  Contrarily, it’s imperative to live a life that brings peace and balance in our soul and heart.

Goldilocks nailed The Art of Living a More Simplistic Life.

I mean, come on, the girl was just living her day: enjoying nature, found an enticing treasure, relaxed, ate some food, and discovered more about her likes and dislikes.  In the end, she was so at peace that she fell asleep.  Shame on those Bears for nearly scaring her to death out of her slumber and almost breaking her neck as she jumped out the window in fear of getting swallowed.  Who’s the real bad guy here?  Besides, she did knock.  By the way, who in their right mind leaves their breakfast uneaten anyway?  Seems like a waste of food to me.

The Moral:  The Art of Living a More Simplistic Life is obvious.  Experience, cherish and value the parts of life that resonate with you and leave the rest.  This is, after all, your Journey Called Life.
