Out of the blue, it hits. The heart begins to race, palms dampen, the mind fills with unpleasant thoughts, and the breath is unsatisfied. Anxiety is rearing its ugly head. It is time to follow 5 Simple Steps to Relieve Anxiety.

The Mission: To practice 5 Simple Steps to Relieve Anxiety to regain control.

Sitting in the exam room for a routine checkup, I waited for the doctor. The white paper beneath me crinkled as I wriggled into a more comfortable position. Symptoms of anxiety bubbled up around me; a slight panic about what was going to happen, what I would say, and what the doctor would tell me clouded my sanity. 

Looking around the room, I noticed a calendar, informational posters, a paper towel dispenser, and an immaculate sink. Lastly, just when I needed it most, a picture focused my sightline: 5 Simple Steps to Relieve Anxiety.

The picture was clear and simple: why have I never realized it before? Anxiety is the feeling of uneasiness and apprehension for something that has not happened yet: a worry for the future. Subsequently, the only way to combat that is to be in the Now. Remove yourself from the future and place yourself back in the Now. Certainly, easier said than done, right? I had nothing to lose while waiting for the doctor, so I tried the 5 Simple Steps to Relieve Anxiety.

  1. See. Look: take in the objects that surround you. What colors do you see? What textures?
  2. Hear. Listen: detect all the noises. What is loud? What is going on in the background?
  3. Smell. Breathe: inhale the air. What do you smell? Can you steadily control your breath?
  4. Taste. Identify: notice the taste. What tastes do you notice in your mouth? How does the inside of your mouth feel?
  5. Feel. Sense: connect with the physical and emotional. What do you feel with your fingertips? How do you feel inwardly?
5 Simple Steps to Relieve Anxiety

That is it! It seems too easy to revert to the five senses that we take for granted every day. However, observing and not judging when doing the 5 Simple Steps to Relieve Anxiety is important. The 5 steps may seem rudimental, but they bring you into the Now; taking away that sense of future that causes anxiety.

Undoubtedly, once I was finished with the 5 Simple Steps to Relieve Anxiety, the doctor entered the room, and believe it or not, I was finally calm.

The Moral: Using the 5 Simple Steps to Relieve Anxiety will transfer you back to the Now, thus alleviating your unnecessary sense of the uncertain future.
